A Walk That Means More Than Miles

At BFF Indy, we talk a lot about the importance of community.
We see it every day in our Facebook group, at our events, and during our Weekly Walks. Women show up looking for friendship, connection, support, and a place to belong. Sometimes they're navigating a new season of life. Sometimes they're grieving. Sometimes they're struggling with loneliness, anxiety, or challenges they haven't shared with anyone yet.
The truth is that connection matters. It matters for our physical health, our emotional well-being, and our mental health.
That's one of the many reasons we're honored to support the Indianapolis Out of the Darkness Walk benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
What Is the Out of the Darkness Walk?

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is one of AFSP's signature events, bringing together people from all walks of life to raise awareness for suicide prevention, support mental health initiatives, remember loved ones lost to suicide, and show those who are struggling that they are not alone.
Each year, thousands of people across the country participate in Out of the Darkness Walks. Some walk in memory of someone they have lost. Others walk to support a friend or family member. Many participate because they understand the importance of mental health and want to be part of creating a culture where seeking help is encouraged and supported.
The Indianapolis Walk creates space for all of those stories.
It's a day filled with remembrance, hope, support, and community. It's a reminder that even in life's darkest moments, we don't have to walk alone.
About AFSP
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the leading voluntary health organization in the United States dedicated to suicide prevention.
AFSP's work focuses on several key areas:
Funding scientific research to better understand and prevent suicide
Advocating for mental health and suicide prevention legislation
Providing educational programs in schools, workplaces, and communities
Supporting survivors of suicide loss
Equipping people with resources to recognize warning signs and help others
Their mission is simple but powerful: to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.
The funds raised through events like the Out of the Darkness Walk directly support these efforts and help expand access to resources, education, and support services across the country.

The Reality of Suicide and Mental Health
Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States and impacts individuals, families, workplaces, schools, and communities every day.
While statistics help us understand the scope of the issue, the reality is that every number represents a person, a friend, sibling, parent, spouse, coworker, or neighbor.
Mental health struggles often happen quietly. Many people carry burdens that others never see.
That's why awareness matters.
That's why education matters.
And that's why community matters.
When we create spaces where people feel seen, valued, and connected, we help reduce the isolation that so many people experience.
As a community built around helping women form genuine friendships, this mission resonates deeply with us.
Why BFF Indy Is Getting Involved
One of the most common things we hear from women who join BFF Indy is that they felt alone before finding our community.
Maybe they had recently moved to Indianapolis. Maybe their friendships changed after marriage or motherhood. Maybe they were navigating a difficult season and didn't know where to turn.
Then they attended an event, joined a walk, or introduced themselves in our group and realized something important:
They're not the only one.
Connection doesn't solve every problem, but it can make a tremendous difference in how we move through life's challenges.
The Out of the Darkness Walk represents many of the same values we strive to create through BFF Indy: connection, compassion, support, and community.
We're proud to use our platform to help spread awareness about AFSP's mission and encourage our members to get involved.
